Dahlia 'Northlake Pride'

  Seasonal Tips
      for Summer

Evergreen flowering shrubbery should be pruned and shaped after they bloom.

Time to tie up your dahlia tubers. Growth is very rapid, and tying up will prevent entire stems from falling over or breaking off.

Perennial beds:
It's time to weed! Help keep flower beds weed free by mulching the surface around all of your flowers. This will keep out the light and greatly reduce the amount of new weed seedlings. Persistent spring rains bring fungal diseases for summer. Spray your disease susceptible plants now with a good fungicide to prevent the onslaught this summer! Susceptible plants include: Garden Phlox, Monarda, Dahlias, Heuchera, Scabiosa, and Columbine. Bait for slugs!

Vegetable gardens:
Tomatoes and potatoes are susceptible to blight, which is a fungal disease brought on by too much rain, and/or overhead watering. This disease doesn't show up until later in the summer, just about when you're ready to begin harvesting. The canes will turn black, and your crop is virtually ruined. Spray with an approved garden fungicide now to prevent this from occuring. Mancozeb is one that works well and is safe for vegetables.

Roses:
Roses are very prone to black spot, a fungal disease being spread right now with all of the wet spring weather. To prevent the black spot from occurring to your roses later this season, use a systemic fungicide now and again in six weeks.

It is time to seed or re-seed a lawn. Established lawns can use an application of fertilizer right now.
